✓ Uncover your own artistic style so you can paint freely and create art that's a true expression of you

✓ Rekindle your creative hobby and finally make time to do something for yourself

✓ Get a break from the monotony of everyday life so you can start living intentionally

✓ Feel relaxed, motivated, and inspired whenever you sit down to paint

✓ Know that you can control your watercolors every time you put paint to paper, making your experience more fun and enjoyable

If you're wondering why you're not there yet, know that you're not alone...

Creating beautiful watercolor art isn't something you're born knowing how to do; it's something you can learn. And the reasons most beginner watercolor enthusiasts struggle so much with this medium are...

They don't feel worthy of using high-quality supplies because they're “just starting out” and want to feel “better at painting” before they make that investment.

Want to know a secret? Low-quality supplies are the main reason watercolor seems so hard to control. And you can tell who's using them because they often complain of buckling paper, paint that looks chalky, and a blotchy finished painting. Which is really frustrating when you just want to relax and create something beautiful.

Truth be told, watercolor is a very demanding medium when it comes to supplies. Even more so than acrylics and oils. That's why it's so important to invest in quality supplies that will support you on your journey.

Not only will your finished artwork look better, but you'll actually be able to enjoy the process because your supplies will behave the way you want them to.

Investing in a creative hobby is your chance to invest in yourself. And you're worth investing in!

They think everything should turn out “perfect” when they sit down to paint.

But what is “perfect” anyway? Looking at more advanced artists' paintings, it's easy to fall into the trap of comparison and feelings of inadequacy when your artwork doesn't turn out the same. But you must remember that everyone's artistic journey is unique and moves at its own pace.

And putting so much pressure on yourself to create something “perfect” each time you put paint to paper only causes unnecessary stress. Art is about reflection and expressing yourself in a way that can't be done with words. As much as we want to create perfect art, there is no such thing.

There is only art that makes us happy.

So get out of your own way, make messes, and experiment. Because that’s the only way you'll improve as an artist.

They're trying to learn on their own with no support system to guide them.

YouTube tutorials are an inexpensive (and easy) way to learn about watercolor painting. All you have to do is press play and follow along. But what happens when your painting doesn't turn out the way you wanted it to? Many beginner artists take that as a sign that they're “terrible at art,” leading them to throw in the towel.

But if you don't know what's going wrong with your artwork, you won't know how to fix it.

That's where having the support and guidance of an experienced watercolor artist (and community) can help! Seeing other people struggle with this medium will make you feel less alone and more like it's a normal challenge (because it is). Plus, you'll have people there to show you exactly what went wrong so you'll know how to fix it next time. And sharing your artwork with others can help you to see the good qualities of your paintings that you couldn't see by yourself.

A supportive community is so important when you're diving into the world of watercolor painting (or anything new for that matter).

Your artistic hobby is more important than you think.

It's so easy to get lost in the day-to-day grind…

...get up, go to work, come home to your family, go to sleep - rinse and repeat. But in all that craziness, you can easily lose yourself. Painting is a hobby that allows you to connect with your inner self. To open your mind, free your thoughts, and express your feelings.

But it's hard to do that when everything about the painting experience leaves you feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.

By using the correct techniques and a positive approach to watercolor painting, you can…

...feel confident about your artistic skills and abilities

...control the water and paint on your paper to create realistic artwork

...translate a reference image or something in your head onto your blank paper

...make watercolor painting a normal part of your daily routine

...create beautiful artwork in less time something that makes you happy and brings you joy

You don't have to continue feeling frustrated and overwhelmed when you sit down to paint. By learning how to work with watercolor, you can paint anything you put your mind to!

“I started this course being new to any kind of art. I've learned so much already. And even though I have a long way to go, I've painted things I never thought I'd be able to. Thank you, Mako, for being such a great teacher! ”

- Diane Smith

Here's a look at what you'll learn on your road trip:

Chapter 1:

Preparing for the Journey

Mastering your watercolor supplies

Paper that buckles. Paint that looks chalky. No one wants to spend a bunch of time painting only to have their finished piece turn out like that. The key to a successful watercolor painting is to use the right supplies from the start.

By the end of this trip, you will:

  • Understand the importance of high-quality supplies and how they can enhance your finished piece of art
  • Know what to look for when choosing your paper, brushes, and paint
  • Know where to shop for quality watercolor supplies, no matter your budget
  • Learn how to break in your new brushes and paint so it's easier to get started
  • Setup your art space in a way that will inspire you to get started (and stick with it)

Chapter 2:

Exploring the World of Watercolor

The main focus of Chapter Two is learning new techniques and then putting them into practice. Each stop on your ride will include step-by-step instructions along with a warm up session to familiarize you with these new techniques. Before moving on to your next destination, you’ll actually put paint to paper and create scenes like…

...cityscapes, misty mountains, a sunset over a lake, a wheat field, etc.

Trip #1: The Art of Mixing Colors

Tired of mixing colors and always coming out with some muddied version of what you were hoping for? That's a common problem, but it's something you can easily figure out by using color theory and everything else you'll learn on this trip.

At the end of this trip, you will:

  • Understand the characteristics of your colors and how they affect your finished artwork
  • Get to know your primary colors
  • Set up your color wheel so you can mix colors confidently
  • Create a rainbow of color options for your artwork, even with a limited palette
  • Be able to mix dark and muted colors to make your paintings look more dynamic and interesting
  • Know how to use your color wheel and mix the right colors like a pro
  • Know how to uncover the power of your paint and how to create harmony in your artwork

Trip #2: The Art of Painting Evenly

Also known as using flat washes to create an even area of color. This is a perfect technique for painting skies, landscapes, or simple shapes you want to look evenly flat. It's a great way to practice and understand how to control the consistency of your paint.

At the end of this trip, you will:

  • Be able to control the paint-to-water ratio on your paper
  • Learn two different flat wash techniques that you can use while painting
  • Understand how to avoid a streaky or blotchy look in your finished artwork
  • Layer your paint without creating a mess
  • Create the illusion of depth on your paper using the flat wash technique
  • Paint scenes of a cityscape and mountain views so you can put into practice all the techniques you're learning

Trip #3: The Art of Blending Colors

One of my favorite watercolor techniques is creating gradients with paint! This technique allows you to create transitions from dark to light or between multiple colors, making it the perfect way to add atmosphere to a landscape painting or make objects look more interesting.

At the end of this trip, you will:

  • Know when to use gradient washes to achieve a realistic look for your finished artwork
  • Understand how to load your brush up with paint and water to achieve this graded coloring effect
  • Be able to create distance in your painting by focusing on color composition
  • Practice what you’ve learned by painting scenes of a wheat field, the countryside, a misty mountain, and a lake at sunset

This is what some of the past students have said:

Trip #4: The Art of Balancing Water

One of the most versatile approaches to watercolor painting, the wet-into-wet technique, can allow you to paint loosely and without any need for precise definition. Although you won’t have full control with this technique, it will allow you to create soft edges in your finished pieces.

At the end of this trip, you will:

  • Be able to add texture and shadows to your paintings to make them look more realistic

  • Know how to balance the amount of paint and water on your paper

  • Be able to control the flow of your paint to avoid a streaky, wet mess

  • Know the best times to use the wet-into-wet technique when painting with watercolor

  • Have a “toolbox” full of water control techniques that will give you more control as you’re painting

  • Practice water control techniques by painting scenes of a mysterious forest, a foggy mountain view, a morning sunrise, and a plane ride home

Chapter 3:

Reach Your Destination by Creating an Original Masterpiece

The Art of Depth & Illusion

Taking all the techniques and watercolor foundations you've learned on your road trip, it's time to create something on your own. In doing this, you'll learn how to paint from a reference image without relying on outside tutorials to guide you.

At the end of this trip, you will:

  • Know how to plan out your painting, making the process of getting started so much easier
  • Understand how to approach your reference image as you get ready to paint
  • Choose a reference image that brings you joy
  • Create a painting that feels like a true reflection of who you are as an artist and as a person
  • Have the confidence to share your finished artwork with others

Here's a look at this roadmap in action…

When you have this knowledge, put it into practice, and then continue to work at it, you'll find increased confidence in yourself as an artist and what you can achieve.

Meet Your Instructor...

Hey, I'm Mako!

Watercolor artist and founder of Makoccino, where I help people find and share their own creative voices through watercolor painting.

For as long as I can remember, painting has been a way for me to express myself and do something creative at the same time. But I wasn't a natural-born artist.

I learned the foundational watercolor techniques while studying in school and fell in love with the way it felt to put paint to paper. Painting became a way for me to freely express myself and create something beautiful at the same time.

Not only am I passionate about watercolor painting, but I also love helping others add joy, peace, and excitement to their lives through a creative hobby.

Over the past decade, I've devoted my time to helping other watercolor enthusiasts learn techniques and skills that will allow them to grow as artists and find joy in the art of watercolor.

If you're ready to feel confident, relaxed, and proud of the art you produce...

“Makoccino, thank you so much for the first lesson! I have a terrible fear of 'doing it wrong' or my painting 'not being perfect', but the way you have broken it into doing exercises first has renewed my confidence!”

The Roadmap to Watercolor Painting is perfect for you if…

✓ You've been following along with YouTube tutorials but just can't seem to get the hang of using watercolor. No matter how hard you try, you still find yourself mixing muddy colors or creating a mess on your paper

✓ You want the process of painting with watercolor to just “click” so when you sit down with a blank sheet of paper, you know the exact steps needed to translate the image in your head (or from a reference) as realistically as possible

✓ You're ready to feel confident about the art you produce so you can share it with friends, family, and the world

✓ You want to feel motivated and inspired to jump back into your watercolor hobby and make it a creative routine that you actually stick with

✓ You're feeling stuck and just want to follow a step-by-step program that will teach you exactly what you need to know in order to create realistic watercolor art

✓ You want to slow things down and learn more about watercolor painting without feeling rushed or hurried through the process

That sounds like me.

Pack your bags and join me on a watercolor journey like no other...

And when you do, you'll have all the confidence, techniques, and community support you'll need to make art a lasting creative hobby. You'll actually want to make time to take out your supplies and create something beautiful.

You'll no longer feel frustrated when painting with watercolor because you'll have more control over your supplies and the way you experience the creative process. Your time spent painting will be something you enjoy (instead of something that adds unnecessary stress to your already hectic life).

With the techniques you'll learn in this course, you'll be able to paint anything you put your mind to, with or without a reference image. And you'll feel proud of your artwork. So proud, in fact, that you'll actually want to share it with friends, family, or even complete strangers!

And that's exactly what I want for you… find a creative hobby that brings joy, excitement, and purpose to your life.

So get ready to unleash your inner artist while being surrounded by an artistic community whose main goal is to lift you up and cheer you on.
